Together with the Institute of Energy Economics of Japan and the Japan Renewable Energy Foundation, the Energy Charter has organised, on 20 November 2014 in Tokyo, a workshop on the "Increasing Role of Renewables in Japan and Future Scenarios for Electricity Interconnections in Northeast Asia", kindly hosted by KPMG. In addition to participants from the industry, universities and research institutes, the workshop was attended by the representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and of Tokyo embassies of Germany, Mongolia, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.
Prof. Nobuo Tanaka, Special Envoy of the Secretary General of the Energy Charter and former Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, made a keynote speech on "Exploring Power Supply Challenges of Northeast Asia". Future scenarios for electricity interconnections in Northeast Asia require a common framework for energy cooperation. As presented and discussed during the workshop, the Energy Charter can play a catalytic role bringing together regional strategic countries such as China, Korea, Japan, Mongolia and Russia. All these countries may share a common vision, namely the Gobitec (the significant potential of renewable generation in the Gobi desert) transported across the region via the Asian Supergrid. The Energy Charter offers a suitable international platform to envisage and discuss large-scale international and regional energy infrastructure projects.
