Secretary General attends the World Energy Leaders Summit in Istanbul

The Energy Charter Secretary General Urban Rusnák was in Istanbul for the World Energy Leaders Summit on 19-20 April 2012. This is an event organised twice a year by the World Energy Council (WEC) for its global Energy Leaders community to enable ongoing high-level dialogue on critical issues affecting the energy world. The focus was on balancing energy security, social equity and environmental impact mitigation; the transition of natural gas markets and implications on geopolitics; financing issues for a low-carbon infrastructure as well as energy storage as a key to unlocking Turkey's potential as a renewable energy hub. The Summit was co-hosted by the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and WEC's Turkish National Member Committee.

On the margins of the Summit, Dr. Rusnák met with WEC Chairman, Dr. Pierre Gadonneix, and WEC Secretary General Dr. Christoph Frei to discuss closer future cooperation between the Energy Charter and the World Energy Council.

While in Istanbul, Dr. Rusnák also met with H.E. Taner Yıldız, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey. Their discussion centred on the modernisation of the Energy Charter in the context of global energy governance and Turkey's support for the consolidation and expansion of the Energy Charter Treaty. The Secretary General also had discussions with Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Dr. Murat Mercan, on Turkey's involvement with the enlargement of the Energy Charter Treaty constituency, particularly in the context of the Energy Charter Secretariat's work on a policy for Consolidation, Expansion and Outreach, as well as the country's experience with arbitration under the Energy Charter Treaty.
