Energy Charter Industry Advisory Panel holds first meeting in Morocco

On 20 September 2012, the Energy Charter Industry Advisory Panel for the first time held a meeting in Morocco, under the framework of the Rabat Energy Forum. The meeting brought together representatives of multinational and national energy companies active in the MENA region, international financial institutions and various government authorities. This event allowed the Energy Charter Secretariat to introduce the Energy Charter in detail to the key energy sector players in the region, to acquire better knowledge of the current state, opportunities and challenges facing the Moroccan energy sector, and to strengthen the dialogue with the private sector on the main directions of the Energy Charter Process.

In their presentations, energy industry representatives pointed out the growth of North Africa's indigenous energy markets, the importance of oil and gas supplies from the region to European and global markets and the enormous potential for renewable energy generation and transmission among North African countries and possibly beyond. It was underlined that the development of large-scale renewable technologies, including wind and concentrated solar power, could also benefit from the many advanced technology solutions available in the chemical and other industry sectors.

Among its conclusions and recommendations the Industry Advisory Panel stated that the Energy Charter could play a valuable role in promoting the technologies, networks and policy frameworks needed to accelerate energy efficiency improvements and large-scale renewable energy development in the North African economies.
