President Rahmon noted that Tajikistan is looking to further develop and use its abundant energy resources in the most efficient and beneficial way, and is interested in wide cooperation to achieve this goal. The President also pointed out that the norms and principles of the Energy Charter Treaty cover all aspects of such a task and that the Energy Charter Process is a good basis for cooperation and drawing on existing possibilities, experience and practices.
Amb. Mernier highlighted the important role that the Energy Charter Treaty can play in promoting investment in Tajikistan's energy sector. The Secretary General confirmed that the Energy Charter is ready to provide support to Tajikistan in developing energy projects and noted that the Energy Charter also actively promotes cross-border energy cooperation in the region.
Two weeks earlier, the Charter's Regional Task Force on Electricity Cooperation in Central and South Asia held its 4th meeting in Kazakhstan. At the meeting, the representatives of Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan agreed a joint declaration, which contains the recommendation to develop a framework for sustainable and secure regional power trade based on the principles of the Energy Charter.
The Energy Charter Secretariat is also currently finalising a set of Model Cross-Border Electricity Agreements, adapted from the existing Model Cross-Border Pipeline Agreements. This work is being carried out with the help of the voluntary Legal Advisory Task Force.
Tajikistan is a member of the Energy Charter Treaty and actively participates in the Energy Charter Process.
