On 31 May 2024, Acting Secretary-General, Ms. Atsuko Hirose, paid a courtesy visit to H.E. Ambassador Faruk Kaymakci, the Permanent Delegate of the Republic of Türkiye to the European Union.  

The Ambassador and the Acting Secretary General discussed the latest developments regarding the Energy Charter Treaty.  The parties reaffirmed continued cooperation and collaboration between Türkiye and the Secretariat, particularly on the modernisation of the Treaty. 

The Depositary of the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), the Government of the Portuguese Republic, has confirmed the receipt of written notification of withdrawal from the ECT from the United Kingdom. The withdrawal shall take effect on 27 April 2025. According to Article 47(3) of the ECT, all the investments covered by the Treaty at the time the withdrawal takes effect will continue enjoying protection for 20 years from such date.

On 7 May 2024, Ambassador and the Head of Mission to the European Union of the Principality of Liechtenstein, H.E. Pascal Schafhauser, vistited the Secretariat and met with the Acting Secretary-General, Ms. Atsuko Hirose.  

Ms. Hirose briefed the Ambassador on the recent developments regarding the Energy Charter Treaty and expressed appreciation for Liechtenstein’s interest in continued involvement with the Treaty and collaboration with the Secretariat.

 

Acting Secretary-General, Ms. Atsuko Hirose, attended the Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) taking place in Tbilisi, Georgia, from 2-5 May 2024.  Ms. Hirose met with over 30 current and former officials of the ADB at the event, including the President of ADB, Mr. Masatsugu Asakawa. 

Given that ADB’s member countries and those of the Energy Charter Treaty overlap significantly, Ms. Hirose discussed the synergies and potential collaboration between the two organisations.
