On 15 December 2022, the Task Force established within the Energy Charter Secretariat under the project “Cooperation for Restoring the Ukrainian Energy Infrastructure”, in partnership with a Ukrainian law firm, held the webinar “Legal Mechanisms Used by Ukraine to Expropriate Russia-Related Energy Companies”.
The webinar was devoted to the legal mechanisms of protecting Ukraine’s national interests against the activities of Russia-related energy companies in the territory of Ukraine. Speakers presented the legal nature and peculiarities of the procedure for expropriation of assets, sanctions, confiscation, nationalization and expropriation, which the Government of Ukraine employs during the ongoing aggression of the Russian Federation and the martial law in Ukraine. Since such mechanisms are closely related to the investment climate in Ukraine, the webinar contributed to a better understanding of the ways to mitigate risks associated with energy-related investments.
The general objective of the project “Cooperation for Restoring the Ukrainian Energy Infrastructure” is to assist the Government of Ukraine in the cost-effective restoration of energy infrastructure, taking into account the clean energy transition while ensuring energy security. The project is funded by the European Commission and implemented by the Energy Charter Secretariat.
