The letter of 11 January on behalf of OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría says:
"I would like to congratulate you on the forthcoming adoption of the International Energy Charter during the Ministerial Conference in May 2015 in The Hague. The International Energy Charter usefully reflects modern energy challenges, and maps out principles for international cooperation in the field of energy.
The OECD strongly supports global, regional and domestic action to support the transition to a low-carbon energy system, in order to ensure that the goal of holding global warming below two degrees is achieved, and to meet the broader climate, economic, energy security and development agendas. The OECD welcomes the promotion by the International Energy Charter of a sustainable energy mix, especially the use of renewable energy sources and clean technologies".
The Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean Mr. Fathallah Sijilmassi wrote to the Energy Charter Secretariat on 26 January:
"I am glad to hear that the negotiations on the International Energy Charter have been concluded. I would like to congratulate the Energy Charter Secretariat for its hard work in concluding the declaration. ln this regard, I thank you very much for your invitation to attend the Ministerial Conference in May and I am pleased to confirm that the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) will be present in this important occasion".
The International Energy Charter will increase the already important potential of the Energy Charter organisation and its political and legal instruments in various parts of the world. Already in September 2013 the former EU Commissioner for Energy and for Development Mr. Andris Piebalgs strongly endorsed the role of the Charter in Southeast Asia in his address to the Charter's Bali Energy Conference.
