The International Energy Charter and Mongolia discuss the improvement of Energy Efficiency Policy

On the 27 September 2022, under the auspices of the Protocol on Energy Efficiency and Related Environmental Aspects (PEEREA) of the Energy Charter Treaty, and at the request of Mongolia, the International Energy Charter embarked upon a five day mission for conducting an in-depth energy efficiency review of Mongolia.

The review team - comprised of international experts, Dr Mesut Avci (Turkey) and Mr Vladyslav Maksakov (Ukraine), and representatives from the Energy Charter Secretariat, Dr Oleksandr Antonenko and Ms Özlem Duyan - met with Director General of Policy and Planning Department of the Ministry of Energy, Mr. Yeren-Ulzii, and other representatives of relevant ministries, regulatory authorities and regulated companies.

The in-depth energy efficiency reviews analyse the broad economic and energy context of the country, patterns of energy use, energy efficiency policies and institutional frameworks. The fact-finding mission provided an opportunity to discuss issues and challenges with stakeholders of the country’s energy sector, and will provide the basis for the recommendations to be presented in a report for adoption by the Energy Charter Conference, the International Energy Charter’s decision-making body, at its annual meeting later this year.
