Secretary General Rusnák welcomes Ukrainian Minister of Energy and Coal Industry at the Energy Charter Secretariat

On 21 February 2013 a Ukrainian delegation headed by the Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Mr. Eduard Stavytsky visited the Energy Charter Secretariat. The Secretary General Dr. Rusnák highlighted the important role that Ukraine plays in the Energy Charter Process and thanked the Ukrainian delegation for their country's valuable contribution to the development of the Energy Charter over the years.

Dr. Rusnák briefed Minister Stavytsky on some of the recent Energy Charter developments, particularly in the field of consolidation and modernisation. The Secretary General confirmed to the Minister that a new Energy Charter instrument for facilitating cross-border energy transit was envisaged, subject to backing from a sufficient number of delegations. Dr. Rusnák also drew attention to the potential of the Energy Charter Treaty, which could be used by Ukraine to encourage investments into the development of conventional and unconventional gas fields. Minister Stavytsky emphasised the interest of his country in diversifying its gas supply.

The Secretary General and Minister Stavytsky also discussed the in-depth energy efficiency review of Ukraine, currently carried out by the Energy Charter, as well as the possibility of an in-depth investment review of the country in 2014.
