Secretary General Rusnák speaks at the Economist Conference on Ukraine's role in European energy security

The Secretary General Dr. Rusnák participated in the conference "Inside Ukraine: Exploring its Future Role in European Energy Security" organised by The Economist in Vienna on 19 March 2013.

In the panel discussion on "Mega Trends: Energy Production and Consumption in the Future Europe", Dr. Rusnák argued that effective approaches towards global energy governance were required. He referred to the modernisation of the Energy Charter as a practical and bold opportunity which might have wider implications for international energy governance and which therefore merited greater attention.

The Secretary General also referred to his recent meeting with Eduard Stavytsky, Ukraine's Minister of Energy and Coal Industry. Ukraine is a country of major importance for European energy security given its role in gas transit. Dr. Rusnák encouraged Ukraine to be more proactive in its use of the Energy Charter, particularly in terms of promoting investments into the development of conventional and unconventional gas fields.
