Secretary General Dr. Rusnák meets with UAE Minister Al Mazrouei, Chinese Vice-Minister Liu Qi and IRENA Deputy Director General Wouters in the margins of the World Energy Leaders' Dialogue in Abu Dhabi

The Secretary General Dr. Rusnák met with the Minister of Energy of the United Arab Emirates Eng. Suhail Al Mazrouei in the margins of the World Energy Leaders' Dialogue held during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week on 21 January 2014.

The focus of the meeting was the potential role of the UAE in the Energy Charter constituency, where the UAE are an observer. Dr. Rusnák informed the Minister of the Secretariat's planned activities for 2014 and highlighted the Charter's good experience of cooperation with countries of the MENA region. The Secretary General invited the UAE to sign the 1991 Energy Charter, the founding document of the Energy Charter Process. He also invited UAE representatives to take part in forthcoming Charter events, including the Knowledge Centre's training programmes.

With Mr. Liu Qi, Vice-Minister of the National Energy Administration of China, Dr. Rusnák discussed the relevance of the Energy Charter Treaty for China's investments and China's involvement in the modernisation of the 1991 Energy Charter. The Secretariat will shortly welcome a secondee from the National Energy Administration as part of cooperation activities between China and the Energy Charter.

Mr. Frank Wouters, Deputy Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and Secretary General Dr. Rusnák discussed the Energy Charter Treaty's investment protection provisions, which also cover investments in renewables. Mr. Wouters and Dr. Rusnák talked about strengthening the cooperation between the two organisations through reciprocal observership and exploring the complementarities of the membership and activities of IRENA and the Energy Charter.
