Secretary General discusses cooperation, transit initiative at UNECE

On 21 November 2013, the Secretary General Dr. Urban Rusnák met with Mr. Sven Alkalaj, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

Dr. Rusnák and Mr. Alkalaj discussed synergies and cooperation in the field of energy in Eurasia, the geographic strongpoint of the two organisations. This included a reflection on cooperation in view of the implementation of a recent United Nations (UN) resolution on reliable energy transit.

The latter was also the subject of a high-level panel discussion at the UNECE Committee on Sustainable Energy, in which Dr. Rusnák took part. The content of resolution 67/263 of the UN General Assembly was presented in the panel by a high-level representative of the government of Turkmenistan, which had sponsored it, together with 71 other states, at the General Assembly. In his presentation, Dr. Rusnák elaborated on the Energy Charter's multilateral framework and expertise on energy transit and cross-border pipelines and grids and offered the Charter as a facilitator to follow-up on Turkmenistan's initiative.
