Secretariat takes part in Algeria–EU Energy Business Forum in Algiers

The Energy Charter Secretariat took part in the Algeria–EU Energy Business Forum on 24 May 2016 in Algiers, Algeria, which was opened by Algerian Minister of Energy H.E. Dr Salah Khebri and European Commissioner for Energy and Climate Mr Miguel Arias Cañete.

This event brought together the main Algerian and European political and economic decision makers and was focused on renewable energy, energy efficiency and natural gas. More than 650 representatives from Algeria and the EU energy business sector in addition to more than 200 representatives of governments, academia and organisations were present.

The Forum explored the means of support to, and implementation of, the ambitious development plan for renewable energy and energy efficiency which was adopted by the Algerian Government in 2015.

The Secretariat was represented by Mr Nidal Tayeh, Middle East and North Africa coordinator, who also addressed the 4th MEDENER International Conference on energy transition. Mr Tayeh presented the role of the Energy Charter in fostering an enabling environment for clean energy investments and the implementation of COP21 targets.

In the margin of both activities, Mr Tayeh met with officials from Algeria, an observer by invitation to the Energy Charter Conference, and with officials from the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They assured the Secretariat of Algeria’s intention to retain its observer status, and to further develop relations with the Energy Charter Conference in view of the new Algerian policy of attracting investors into renewable energy sector.
