Opportunities and Benefits of the Energy Charter for Latin America and the Caribbean

In the context of the 3GF Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean held in Santiago de Chile on 18-19 June 2015, Amb. Selim Kuneralp, Deputy Secretary General of the Energy Charter Secretariat and Ernesto Bonafé, Regulatory Expert, visited Chile as a new member to the International Energy Charter.

They presented the opportunities and benefits of the International Energy Charter at the Conference on 'Scaling-Up Clean Energy through Trade Reform: Opportunities for Latin America' organised by the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development, the Chilean Ministry of Energy and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean on 17 June 2015.

The Deputy Secretary General Amb. Kuneralp and Mr. Bonafé also met Chilean senior government officials. At the Ministry of Energy they were received by the Vice Minister Ms. Jimena Jara and the Head of International Affairs Ms. Paula Estevez. At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs a meeting was held with Under-Secretary Mr. Edgardo Riveros, which was also attended by Amb. Gabriel Rodriguez García-Huidobro, Director of Energy, Science, Technology and Innovation, and by the Turkish Ambassador Ms. Gokcen Kaya. The two sides discussed future cooperation between Chile and the Energy Charter Secretariat. An issue that was particularly underlined was the possibility of holding a seminar on regional energy integration in Chile, to which interested neighbouring countries would be invited.
