Launch of the DACO Project: Energy efficiency at local level

The DACO project was launched on 15-16 February 2012 at a meeting in Chieti, Italy. This event brought together representatives of the Energy Charter Secretariat, the Local Energy Agency of the Province of Chieti (ALESA), the European Commission and the mayors of the cities participating in the project: Novogrudok (Belarus), Somoniyon (Tajikistan), Sumgayit (Azerbaijan) and Taraz (Kazakhstan).

The discussion focused on the steps for implementing the DACO project, particularly the methodology to be adopted for the evaluation of GHG emissions and the development of a sustainable energy action plan. The participants also reviewed the requirements for setting up a training module for local experts and facilitating the sharing of best practices in the field.

The next stage of DACO will be the organisation of stakeholder meetings during the course of 2012 in each of the four project partner cities.

The global objective of the DACO (Yes (Da) to the Covenant) action is to support local authorities in acquiring a common methodology to correctly monitor, evaluate and reduce their energy consumption and CO2 emissions. More specifically, the aim is to improve energy security at local level by enhancing energy efficiency, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and contributing to climate change mitigation in the participating regions, thus implementing the concept "Think Globally, Act Locally". The intention is to extend the principles, rules and goals of the Covenant of Mayors to these new participating regions.

Note: the DACO project benefits from financial assistance from the European Commission. The views expressed on this page are those of the Energy Charter Secretariat and can therefore in no way be taken to reflect the official opinion of the European Commission.
