International Energy Charter receives Pál Ságvári, Ambassador-at-Large for Energy Security from Hungary

Energy Charter Secretary General Dr Urban Rusnák met with Pál Ságvári, Ambassador-at-Large for Energy Security, Hungary, on 24 January 2017 at the Energy Charter Secretariat in Brussels.

The topic of discussion, was the importance of the Energy Charter Treaty in European Union (EU) external energy diplomacy. Often the role of energy is viewed only from a consumers point of view. Nevertheless, for supplier countries, energy represents an equally crucial decision making factor for governments and companies. Supply countries are required to invest vast amounts of capital in order to develop energy supplies in the mid-term, and this requires a stable, predictable consumer to ensure cost recovery. That is why it is important that consumer and supplier countries come together and understand their mutual needs and goals. Dr Rusnák highlighted the importance the International Energy Charter can play as a platform for energy discussions, in bringing together supplier countries and consumer countries, in order to encourage collaboration and foster mutual benefits.

Other highlights from the discussion was the potential of the International Energy Charter and the European External Action Service (EEAS) working together to develop an energy discussion between the EU and other countries. The platform would discuss the role of the Energy Charter in energy diplomacy and energy governance within the EU and the broader energy world.
