Energy Charter Secretariat gives a lecture at CEPMLP

Dr. Ernesto Bonafé, expert on energy regulation at the Energy Charter Secretariat, gave a lecture as a visiting speaker at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum, Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) on 26 March 2015.

This lecture took place under the Memorandum of Understanding between the Secretariat and CEPMLP and was part of the Centre’s Graduate School Visiting Speaker Series. Dr. Bonafé spoke on the topic "2015 International Energy Charter – Focus on Africa with Reference to Latin America". His talk was chaired by CEPMLP Director Peter Cameron.

Dr. Bonafé presented the current efforts to expand the Energy Charter to new geographic areas, particularly to Africa and Latin America, where the increasing energy demand is to be met with significant investments in new production and transportation infrastructure. Recently, Sub-Saharan African countries such as Chad, Namibia, Niger, Swaziland, Tanzania and Uganda, and Latin American countries such as Chile and Colombia, have expressed their acceptance of the text of the International Energy Charter to be formally adopted on 20 May 2015 in The Hague. These developments show the global dimension of the market principles inspiring the Energy Charter.

A number of CEPMLP students undergoing an internship at the Energy Charter Secretariat have actively participated in disseminating information on the international level playing field that is the Charter and have made important contributions attracting new countries to the 2015 International Energy Charter.
