Energy Charter Modernisation discussed during consultations with Turkish authorities

The Secretary General Dr. Rusnák visited Ankara for consultations with Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MENR) on 13-14 June 2013. At the MFA, Secretary General met with Amb. Mehmet Gucuk, Deputy Undersecretary for Economic Affairs. At MENR, the meeting was with Mr. Sefa Sadik Aytekin, Deputy Undersecretary.

One of the central topics discussed was the preparations for the 24th Meeting of the Energy Charter Conference. The parties also talked about the ongoing process of Energy Charter modernisation and, more specifically, the modernisation of the 1991 Energy Charter. As part of Energy Charter modernisation, Turkish authorities expressed strong support for the expansion of the Energy Charter Process, particularly in the MENA and South Asian regions.

During consultations, Turkey's role as an important transit country for major cross-border oil and gas flows was discussed. The Secretary General suggested that Turkey and other energy transit countries could be at the forefront of the dialogue on a reset of negotiations on a new Energy Charter instrument for energy transit.
