Energy Charter Industry Advisory Panel holds a meeting in Rome

The Industry Advisory Panel of the Energy Charter held a meeting on 28 June 2013 in Rome. The meeting was hosted by the Panel member Edison Company. Participants addressed the topics of major schemes related to natural gas markets, research and technological development in renewables and issues related to designing an international legal framework for an integrated EU-MENA power system.

It was noted that natural gas played a key role in transforming energy markets towards a low-carbon future in various ways across different regions. Energy companies are at the forefront of this transformation, which encompasses challenges in the downstream markets constrained by demand slowdown and development of renewables in the European Union, as well as by those challenges linked to developing consumer-producer relations. Participants underlined that research in the energy sector and the spread of environmentally friendly technologies were fundamental for meeting the world's growing energy needs in an economically, socially and environmentally responsible way.

The meeting concluded that international political commitment was essential for an integrated EU-MENA power system. The Energy Charter Treaty and other international mechanisms have high potential to promote cooperation through establishing a multilateral investment and trade framework in the MENA region.
