Energy Charter Energy Efficiency Group discusses In-Depth Reviews of Tajikistan and Ukraine

The Energy Charter Working Group on Energy Efficiency held its regular meeting on 1 October 2013. Delegates from thirteen Charter member countries, the European Commission and the observer state of Montenegro attended the meeting. Delegates were given presentations on the in-depth energy efficiency reviews of Tajikistan and Ukraine, prepared earlier this year. It was agreed to forward to the Energy Charter Conference for adoption by written procedure the recommendations made to the governments of Tajikistan and Ukraine.

Delegates also discussed the Group's priorities for 2014 and the Energy Charter Secretariat's corresponding programme of work. It was agreed that the in-depth energy efficiency review process for member countries would remain the Group's core activity. At the same time, more emphasis would be given to Charter observers and countries covered by the organisation's expansion and outreach policy, as well as to follow-up activities for already reviewed countries.

During the last session, the Secretariat informed the delegations of the recent activities within the framework of the DACO project (Yes(Da) to the Covenant of Mayors). The project is part of the EU Commission financed programme 'Covenant of Mayors going East'. Its objective is to encourage and support local authorities from Eastern Europe and Central Asia to join the Covenant of Mayors – an initiative promoting energy efficiency at local level. Representatives from DACO partner cities presented their sustainable energy action plans and pilot projects, developed with the support of of the DACO project team.
