Crucial role of water resources in Central and South Asia region development

On June 8, 2010, the Energy Charter Deputy Secretary General, Amb. Vladimir Rakhmanin delivered an opening statement at the High-Level International Conference on the mid-term comprehensive review of the implementation of the International Decade for Action "Water for Life 2005-2015", which took place in the capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe.

In the afternoon of the same day, the Conference Plenary Session was followed by Round Tables and Side Events. Mr. Rakhmanin delivered a statement at the Side Event which was devoted to Tajikistan's Hydropower Potential and its importance in managing water-energy issues in Central and South Asia.

THE DUSHANBE DECLARATION ON WATER reflected that being one of the sources of renewable energy, water is needed to generate power, and power is needed to deliver water as well as many other basic services to the population. Sustainable hydropower generation may contribute to the important progress in poverty reduction, mitigating climate change, and achieving overall sustainable development, particularly in developing countries.

Delegations from 70 United Nations (UN) member states and representatives of 65 international and regional organisations, international NGOs as well as international scientific and research institutions participated in the Conference. Ministers, State Secretaries and other high-level officials from the UN member states and the heads of various international and regional organisations were among the Conference participants.
