Caspian offshore development conference

On 16-17 June 2011, delegates from major regional and international oil and gas companies, state institutions, regional and international organisations gathered in Astana, Kazakhstan, to discuss the development of Caspian offshore fields. The aim of the conference was to facilitate regional and international cooperation as well as intensify the exchange of experience in using innovative technologies and improving the legal framework for the use of subsoil resources on the continental shelf.

The discussion during the conference particularly focused on developing the routes and transportation means for reliable oil and gas supplies from offshore fields in the Caspian.  Mr. Samadov, Energy Charter Secretariat Senior Expert on Investment, delivered a speech "The Energy Charter Treaty: Transit and Model Agreements". The participants noted the direct relevance and importance of the Energy Charter activities in ensuring secure, efficient and unimpeded transit from production to consumer regions.

Along with important transit and investments considerations, discussions focused on key offshore projects in Kazakhstan, Russia and Azerbaijan, as well as on the role of and prospects for the Turkmen shelf of the Caspian Sea. The participants shared their experience in ensuring environmental safety of marine oil operations and their views on how to create favourable political and economic conditions for further development of offshore fields.
