Written notification of withdrawal from the Energy Charter Treaty

The Depositary of the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), the Government of the Portuguese Republic, has confirmed the receipt of written notification of withdrawal from the ECT from the Portuguese Republic. The withdrawal shall take effect on 2 February 2025. According to Article 47(3) of the ECT, all the investments covered by the Treaty at the time the withdrawal takes effect will continue enjoying protection for 20 years from such date.

Previously, the Depositary confirmed the receipt of written notification of withdrawal from the ECT from

- France (effective on 8 December 2023);

- Germany (effective on 20 December 2023);

- Poland (effective on 29 December 2023);

- Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg (effective on 17 June 2024); and

- Slovenia (effective on 14 October 2024).

Apart from earlier announced notifications, the Secretariat is not aware that the Depository has received any other notification of withdrawal from the ECT.
