The Ukrainian Ambassador pays a visit to the Energy Charter Secretariat

On 23 August 2022, Secretary-General Mr. Guy Lentz met with with H.E. Mr. Vsevolod Chentsov, the Ambassador and the Head of the Mission of Ukraine to the European Union.

The Secretary-General and the Ambassador had an exchange regarding the recent notification of Ukraine under Article 17(2)(a)-(b) of the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) and discussed the situation in the Zaporizka nuclear power plant (ZNPP) in Ukraine, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe which has been occupied by the Russian military forces since the beginning of March 2022.

The Secretary-General outlined the potential role of the ECT in restoring critical energy infrastructure as the result of the Russian aggression, and updated the Ambassador on the preliminary results of the Task Force established at the Secretariat as a part of the project “Cooperation for Restoring the Ukrainian Energy Infrastructure”.

Secretary-General also expressed his willingness to visit Ukrainian authorities in charge of energy in Kyiv prior to the Energy Charter Conference on November 22, in order to facilitate the preparation for the massive post-conflict investments that will be needed from energy companies of the Contracting Parties towards restoration of the energy infrastructure in Ukraine.
