On 15 June 2022, the Secretary-General of the Energy Charter Secretariat, Mr. Guy Lentz, and the Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Atsuko Hirose, met with H.E. Daniela Morari, Ambassador of the Mission of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union, and Mr. Ghenadie Marian, Second Secretary.
The parties discussed the current energy situation in Europe in light of the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine, in particular, its adverse impact on Moldova’s economy and energy security.
The Ambassador expressed Moldova’s interest in furthering cooperation with the Energy Charter in the field of energy efficiency. It was noted that the In-Depth Review of Energy Efficiency in Moldova was conducted by the Secretariat some years ago, and that Moldova maybe interested in an update of such review.
The Ambassador mentioned the formal application by Moldova for the membership in the European Union, which will be discussed at the European Council shortly, and that a high level delegation will be visiting Brussels in that connection. The Secretary-General extended the invitation to the delegation, as well as to the Ambassador, of the Ad-Hoc Energy Charter Conference taking place on 24 June 2022.
The Ambassador also informed that the Deputy Prime Minister of Moldova, who is in charge of energy, will be in Brussels on 30 June 2022. The Secretary-General responded that it would be his pleasure and honour to meet the Deputy Prime Minister to discuss the energy matters of the Deputy Prime Minister’s interest.
