High-Level Meetings in the Republic of Kazakhstan

On 4-5 October 2021 in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, in conjunction with and on the margins of the World Energy Week and KAZENERGY Eurasian Forum, the Secretary-General of the Energy Charter, HE Dr Urban Rusnak held a number of bilateral meetings with high-level officials of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

At the meeting, with HE Mr Akan Rakhmetullin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, the parties discussed the current international energy landscape in the ECT, energy transition and security, and Kazakhstan’s approaches to decarbonization in light of the significant presence of fossil fuels in its energy balance.  The Deputy Minister was also briefed on the ongoing modernisation process of the ECT.  


The second meeting took place with HE Mr Magzum Mirzagaliyev, the Minister of Energy, which is responsible for representing the Republic in the Energy Charter.  The meeting  primarily focused on the current situation with energy prices in certain parts of the globe and the potential approaches of Kazakhstan to the decarbonization process given its high dependence on coal in specific regions and the position of Kazakhstan concerning the future of hydrogen.  The parties also touched upon the ongoing modernisation of the ECT and cooperation between the Ministry of Energy and the Energy Charter Secretariat. 


The meeting with HE Mr Marat Beketayev, the Minister of Justice, concentrated mainly on the particularities of the ongoing modernisation process of the ECT, and Kazakhstan’s views on certain areas thereof.
