Focus on the Caspian: gas infrastructure and power generation

On 21-23 September 2011 the capital of Azerbaijan Baku hosted two highly successful conferences - Gas Infrastructure World Caspian 2011 and Power Generation World Caspian 2011.

The gas infrastructure event brought together major NOC and IOC decision makers from across the region as well as ministers of energy and policy makers, who addressed an international audience. The opening keynote speech was by delivered by Mr. Rovnag Abdullayev, the President of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR). Mr. Abdullayev's speech focused on Azerbaijan's role in opening up the Southern Gas Corridor. Other speeches were by the Turkish Ministry of Energy's Mr. Reha Aykul Muratoglu, as well as BP Azerbaijan's Head of Finance Mr. Richard Tawse.

The focus of the power generation conference was on improving power generation supply, efficiency and distribution in the Caspian region. Representatives of regional governments, investors, utilities, power generators and other important sector players discussed such issues as mutually beneficial partnerships to improve Caspian energy efficiency, different methods of financing Caspian power projects, the potential for regulatory reform, modernising the existing infrastructure and identifying the investment conditions for new projects, expanding the regional energy mix to include renewables effectively and carbon emission reduction.

The Energy Charter Secretariat was represented at both events by Mr. Patrick Larkin, Senior Adviser, who delivered addresses on behalf of the Secretary General, Amb. André Mernier, entitled "Addressing the Large-Scale Financing of Major Infrastructure Projects to Enable Effective Gas Production" and "Promoting Electricity Cooperation Investment in the Caspian Region for the Benefit of Consumers and Business".
