Energy Charter Secretariat and Breakthrough Energy discuss potential collaboration

On 5 September 2022, the Secretary-General of the Energy Charter Secretariat (ECS), Mr Guy Lentz, and the Deputy Secretary-General, Ms Atsuko Hirose, held an online meeting with the Vice President, Europe, of Breakthrough Energy, Ms Ann Mettler. Breakthrough Energy is a network of entities and initiatives established in 2015 by Bill Gates and a coalition of private investors.

Ms Ishita Pant and Mr Edward Safaryan, Investment Officials at the ECS and Ms Jordan Poncet, Associate at Breakthrough Energy, also participated in the meeting.

The parties presented the main streams of their work and discussed the possible collaboration between the two organisations. In particular, both organisations are involved in analysing policies and incentives for reducing the costs of advanced energy and carbon-reducing technologies and reviewing legal and regulatory frameworks for protecting clean energy investment in emerging markets. The Secretary-General also informed Ms Mettler about the Energy Investment Risk Assessment publication and the first Ukrainian Energy Sector Damage Assessment Report prepared by the Task Force under the “Cooperation for Restoring the Ukrainian Energy Infrastructure” project funded by the European Commission and implemented by the Energy Charter Secretariat.

The Secretary-General and Ms Mettler agreed on further exchange of information on projects and activities implemented by both organisations and on holding another discussion for exploring various areas of cooperation.
