Deputy Secretary General pays a courtesy visit to the State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan

On 10 August 2022, Deputy Secretary General (DSG) Atsuko Hirose paid a courtesy visit to the State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Mr. Kiyoshi Odawara.

The State Minister for Foreign Affairs stated that, in the current global situation where energy prices are rising considerably in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the importance of the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), which promotes and protects energy sector investments and energy security, is increasing considerably.

He was aware that, since assuming her post, DSG has ensured the smooth management of the Energy Charter Secretariat by improving the relationship with the contracting parties, including strengthening cooperation with the Japanese government, which was appreciated.

He also welcomed the agreement-in-principle reached in the ECT modernisation negotiations and expressed the willingness of the Japanese government to make necessary preparation for its adoption.

DSG expressed her gratitude to the continuous support provided by the Japanese government.
