Conference on the first 20 years of the Energy Charter Treaty

Paris, 7 March 2014 – the Energy Charter Secretary General Dr. Rusnák gave today a welcome speech at the Conference to mark the 20-year anniversary of the signing of the Energy Charter Treaty. The conference was organised jointly by the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC) and the Energy Charter Secretariat.

The Secretary General presented the statistics on investor-state dispute settlement under the Energy Charter Treaty, and the Secretariat's proposals regarding increasing the transparency and general awareness of investment arbitration issues.

The conference brought together experts from law firms and academia to discuss and reflect on the implementation of the Energy Charter Treaty and to contemplate future developments. The event particularly focuses on the current investment arbitration cases under the Energy Charter Treaty, the right to regulate by host states under the Treaty, and on energy market liberalisation and renewable energy. The conference is part of a cooperation project between the Energy Charter Secretariat, ICSID and the SCC – two of the institutions administering arbitration under Art. 26 of the Energy Charter Treaty.
