On 31 January 2025, the Contracting Parties to the Energy Charter Protocol on Energy Efficiency and Related Environmental Aspects (PEEREA) adopted amendments to the PEEREA, formally designating the Energy Charter Secretariat as its successor Depositary.

Effective 2 February 2025, and pending the official entry into force of these amendments, the Energy Charter Secretariat assumes the role of Depositary on an interim basis, ensuring the continued administration of the PEEREA.
