Ambassador of Azerbaijan and Secretary-General discussed the ECT role to facilitate trade, energy security and the energy transition

On 12 January 2022, the Energy Charter Secretary-General, Mr Guy Lentz, met with the Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Kingdom of Belgium, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the head of the Mission to the European Union, His Excellency Mr Vaqif Sadıqov.

Mr Sadıqov informed the Secretary-General about the ongoing and planned projects related to natural gas transit, energy security, and Azerbaijan's clean energy transition. He specifically highlighted the benefits of bringing the natural gas from Turkmenistan to the EU market using the capacities of the Southern Gas Corridor. The new energy route not only improves the security and diversity of the EU's energy supply, but will potentially provide an opportunity for the utilisation of the recently-launched pipeline for the cross-border trade of green hydrogen in the ECT constituency. The Ambassador specifically highlighted the ECT's role in ensuring the legal foundation of international energy cooperation and expressed his readiness to support further the Energy Charter process and the energy transition in ECT Contracting Parties.

Mr Lentz outlined his vision of the development of the Energy Charter process and the role of ECT in facilitating the clean energy transition. The Secretary-General further proposed deepening the cooperation between the Secretariat and the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan by working together on energy transition and green hydrogen transportation. Provided the Secretariat is able to receive extra-budgetary funds from Azerbaijan or other ECT Members, the Secretariat can play a crucial role in developing the Energy Transition Action Plans in the ECT constituency and becoming the “center of excellence” in this domain.
