The International Energy Charter attends Steering Committee Meeting in Mongolia

The Inception Workshop and the Steering Committee Meeting on the Northeast Asia Power System Interconnection (NAPSI) was held on 20 June 2017 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Energy Charter Assistant Secretary General, Dr Masami Nakata attended the meetings as requested by the Asian Development Bank and the Government of Mongolia. The Energy Charter Secretariat was invited to be a member of the steering committee, which is set up to validate and guide the NAPSI Technical Assistance Project.

The Government of Mongolia requested the Asian Development Bank to prepare a Strategy for NAPSI using Mongolia’s abundant renewable energy resources, solar and wind in particular, and create a low-carbon regional energy system. At the Inception workshop, Électricité de France (EDF) presented the inception paper for detailing an action plan and road map for creating the Northeast Asia Power System Interconnection. The NAPSI requires a close energy cooperation among Northeast Asian countries. Given the fact that Mongolia and Japan are members of the Energy Charter Treaty and China and the Republic of Korea are observers, the Energy Charter Secretariat is expected to play an advisory role for the regional energy cooperation under the framework of Energy Charter Treaty.
