President of the Slovak Republic Gašparovič receives Secretary General Rusnák

President of the Slovak Republic Mr. Ivan Gašparovič received Energy Charter Secretary General Dr. Urban Rusnák in Bratislava on 27 November 2013. 

Dr. Rusnák informed President Gašparovič of the latest developments within the Energy Charter Process and the ongoing Charter modernisation. The Secretary General specifically highlighted the work planned for next year on updating the 1991 Energy Charter, the political declaration at the heart of the Energy Charter Process. The decision on proceeding with negotiations on the updated version of the Energy Charter was formally adopted by the Energy Charter Conference, the organisation's top governing body, on 27 November 2013.

Dr. Rusnák also met with the State Secretary of the Slovak Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs Mr. Peter Javorčik, and with the State Secretary of the Slovak Ministry of Economy Mr. Dušan Petrík. The parties discussed the forthcoming meeting of the Energy Charter Conference, Energy Charter modernisation and the achievements to date in implementing the Charter's expansion and outreach policy. Mr. Javorčik and Mr. Petrík particularly expressed their satisfaction with the role of the newly established Energy Charter Liaison Embassies in assisting Montenegro in its process of accession to the Energy Charter Treaty. It is anticipated that Montenegro will be invited to accede to the Treaty during the meeting of the Energy Charter Conference on 5-6 December 2013.

During his visit to Bratislava, Dr. Rusnák also delivered a keynote speech on the topic of "Energy Charter Perspectives: from Regional to Global Energy Governance" at the Central European Energy Conference on 24 November 2013.
